Drawings Collage – Vintage LP Record Covers

Drawings, Collage,
on Vintage LP Record Album Covers

This series of over 100 works came from an assignment I gave myself to make 100 drawings in 100 days http://100drawings100days.blogspot.com where I was simply seeking to inspire my studio practice and enliven my creativity through exploring ritual, repetition, habit and meditation of sorts. In my Creativity Life Coaching I often find myself encouraging others to carve out just a little bit of time for the projects they want to do. By doing at least a little of what we want every day, new habits are developed and movement toward larger goals is made possible. So I wanted to practice what I preach.

I made a commitment to make a drawing every day of an object, usually about the size you can hold in your hand, and often made of glass or shiny metal – I’m entranced by the play of light on those surfaces. I chose to draw on cardboard, the kind you find on the back of a sketchbook or notebook, and I used basic graphite pencils. I also went in with acrylic white paint to add highlights to the medium tone of the cardboard.

The daily drawings were so energizing that making them into collage pieces happened naturally, spontaneously, and intuitively. Just the idea of having 100 of them at the end of the project excited me and fueled the fire of creative possibility.

The LP covers as a substrate added unity to the series and also provided a starting point for design considerations. By matching up a drawing with the design on the cover, and then editing out, covering up, and adding to the designs and colors already present, I tuned in to my own inner aesthetic and simply made the adjustments that needed to be made to allow the piece to emerge as it must. I found tricks that worked but tried not to repeat them in the same way throughout the series thereby finding novelty and new pathways.
